I haven’t used quicken in several years, but I wanted to figure out how I was spending my money. Quicken does connect to my local bank and automatically pulled all my transactions and had them categorized.
I’ve used Quicken and Quickbooks for over 20 years. Yes, I’m old. I’m thankful that when I decided to abandon Microsoft PCs a few years back that Intuit had products that I could port my data to and that worked to take care of tracking personal and company finances. Yes, there are a few quirks in the software, but each version is getting better. Quickbooks (the pro version, not the web version) in particular has a great support network of accounting professionals that can help you find ways around “features.” I’ve learned to embrace the different way Quicken works on a Mac from the way it works on a PC and I’m happy with the product. For everyone’s sake, if you find Quicken a one star, please include the product name of something you like better.
Should have heeded the warnings that every single review is 1 star. Don’t fool yourself, this is 1 star for a reason. In my case, I could not get past “quicken needs to use your keychain”. Clicking it 500 times allow, allow all or decline makes no difference. It pops up anyway. Submitting request for money back through apple.
Fidelity works for my wife but not my account. Kohl’s has problems. My mortgage company is not even listed. You would think that by owning Mint.com for as long as they did, Intuit would have incorporated their connection technology into Quicken. No. What a waste of $70!
Starting back in August, Quicken failed to update several accounts. Since then, it created a duplicate set of accounts, to include my business accounts. I did upgrade to Quicken 2016 today, but now my financial records are such a freakin’ mess, and tax season is just a couple months away. How in the world do I fix the mess that Quicken has made of my financial records??? I’m so unhappy with this product, and it’s an expensive program compared to others. I’m so disappointed in the quality, and the hours of work Quicken has caused me.
The bugs are almost too numerous to list. Very frustrating. I loved MS Money and was upset when that was sunset. I used Quicken on a PC for awhile - but when I bought my Mac I switched to iBank. iBank is good - but thought I would give Quicken another chance…BIG mistake. The mobile app is not intuitive and I can’t get my bank to update on it. The balances in the main app are wrong. It crashes frequently for no reason, right in the middle of editing transactions. There are smal navigational issues that are too numerous to list too…I will be seeking a refund.
I updated from 2015 to 2016 and wish I never had. I cannot get anything to update on this new version. There is no where to call for customer support and I have been rendered helpless on trying to use this. This was almost $90.00 and I am unable to use it. It is super irritating to buy a Mac product and it not work, especially at this price! DO NOT buy it, if you are using 2015 with no problems, stick with it.
Sadly, the other reviewers were not being too harsh. This is awful. Quicken does crash regularly, but perhaps worst is how rudimentary the functions are. Yes, it will download your transactions, but unlike the Windows version, it throws everything it downloads in your register immediately without the chance to review it, first. So you can end up trying to search through your registers finding transactions that were erroneously added. It made a mess of my investment account that I am still trying to sort out. A sad ending for a formerly top-notch money management product.
I didn’t upgrade so I took a chance after checking to make sure Aon Hewitt would finally work (it didn’t in the past). Things are working great for me and I finally have my retirement in the program so I’m quite pleased so far. However, reading the reviews scares me when it comes to upgrading!
I lost all my work due to the bugs in the app. The app constantly crashes and changes the entries I have confirmed and reconciled. Some entries are missing randomly. The app should be dropped from the app store!!! I have requested a full refund.
I am a longtime Quicken user and have used quicken ever since its inception. I dumped my pc and bought a surface which i have mixed feelings about but one thing I do like is the ability to use quicken on the surface. When the new version of Quicken for mac came out I was totally excited, I thought finally a version that i can update from my bank which by the way is US Bank. I bought it and downloaded it and could never set my bank up. It continually ask for me to update the password, understanding that the first time you connect through PFM it requires a bank password change, I did that but everytime i go to download it ask me to update the password so I am not using it and will continue to use Ibank. In addition, Intuit still has not updated their mobile app after years of complaining that it needs a daily balance field for each day. So overall don’t waste your money if you use US Bank not sure about other banks. I even called Quicken support about this after calling my bank and asked if they had updated their PFM software for Mac and they said they did not. I also updated my 2016 on my Surface it works fine so this is a MAC issue. When I spoke with a Quicken support rep he could not help in fact he did not even know what PFM was, not sure why he was answering calls for Quicken banking issues. But completly disappointed and every so often i check to see if this has been fixed but it has not. I am pretty sure I am done with Quicken the surface is fine for other things but the quicken screen is just too small to work with, and considering they have not improved the mobile sync or app I’m finished.
quits with “uploading” and will give iincomprehensible error messages such as “ error 155 FI i blocking access” despite the fact that it worked fine last week. Tech support is almost non existent. Used Quicken Essentials for Mac previously, and upgraded after that stopped working also with no explanation. Will not be using Quicken again. Look elsewhere is you are looking for a finacial app
I’ve been using Quicken since it’s beginning (always on an Apple product). I went to Quicken Essentials a few years ago and after a few updates, it seems to work fine. I haven’t used the program to pay bills for years but I use it to pull all of my checking accounts and credit cards together in one database and then, using the categories, I can analyze how I spend my money. At tax time, I print the IRS schedules to give to my accountant. I tried Quicken 2015 last year but it would always freeze when it tried to convert my Essentials database. I just bought Quicken 2106 and, lo and behold, it has the same issue. When it starts the database conversation and asks for my persmission to go the OS X Keychain to get my Intuit ID, it freezes and the spinning ball starts (when you try the force quit, it says that Quicken is not responding). Intuit has always been an enigma to me…he was a friend of Steve Jobs and sat of the Apple board. Jobs was a stickler for programing excellence but Intuit has always been just a mediocre application…great in concept but poor in execution. Jobs would have called it a piece of s**t. My next step is to see if there is an update from Intuit (since I bought it from the Apple Applications Store, I’d think it was the latest and best version)…if that doesn’t work, I’ll go for a refund and go back to Essentials.
The reviews are correct - this app crashes like mad. No rhyme or reason, just trying to input data and it folds like laundry. For $75 and laugh-in-your-face, built in planned obsolescence, I not only expect better, I demand better. Must we get screwed by EVERY financial apparatus?
Well, I’ve been a long time Quicken user (like so many others.) When I switched to “all Mac’s” at first I ran Quicken for Windows in a VM and then when Essentials came out I switched. Essentials was a buggy beast but I had it working. Then suddenly it stoped being able to read downloaded bank transactions. Probably a ploy by Intuit to force us loyal users to upgrade. Tax seaons is here and I needed to update records so I went for 2016. I don’t use any of Quickens features other than just an electronic place to hold all my transactions and having the ability to search them easily. What I discovered was that there were some things in essentials that were fixed. For example, you can now “link” a bank account to an existing account when quicken detects a new account ID from your bank. Something that in the past caused me to have to basically create a “new” account under essentials. That was nice. The down side is that it can’t count correctly when doing a simple reconcile. I had to ‘hand adjust’ 90% of my accounts to get it happy. What a piece of crap from a banking software package. Additionally I had it crash on me twice in the first hour of use. Not a good sign. Its a very buggy piece of software. Overall, its slightly better than nothing and I think a small upgrade over essentials, so I gave it 3 stars.
I read all of these negative reviews and I have to tell you, it prevented me from buying this upgrade. I’ve been a user of Quicken since 1984, I have 450+mb of an original file and if anyone is going to have a problem with this app...its me. Quicken Essentials was dying - no, it was dead. I was manually entering over 20 different accounts. I downloaded some other apps, and that was going to be at least a weeks worth of work. So I bit down on the $75 price tag, expecting disaster. Nope. After typing all of my complex passwords, the app synced and has been running just as I had expected - with no errors. Been running for over a month now. - love it. Just my experience...
Cannot believe this is released software and they charge money for it. You will be better off using Mint for free. Some of the worst defects that come to mind: - Synchronizing transactions is very unreliable. My initial sync of my checking account had every transaction duplicated 14 times. - Complete lack of support for your primary residence as an asset - assets are generic and all information must be entered manually - Cannot link to your mortgage account - Lack of support for automated loan amortization. No, really. You can schedule a recurring payment, but interest and principal have to be calculated manually - Reporting functionality is primitive. No ability to compare expenses in a category to other time periods, or to the yearly average. On top of this, generally crash-prone as other reviewers have noted. Shockingly, god-awful bad. I only gave it one star because zero stars was not an option
Crashes constantly upon simple entries. Either fix or send out refunds!
The Apple Store bought version of this product is stripped of the Quicken > Check for Updates menu item. Therefore, there is no way for you to stay up to date in a timely manner. Currently the current version for Macintosh available from Intuit directly is 3.0.4, while the version available through the App Store is 3.0.1. Intuit blames Apple for the delays. Who is to know. As far as the software itself is concerned, this version crashes often while doing mundane tasks (selecting Account > Reconcile Account, was one of the places where it crashed for me. In terms of functionality, this version is a pale version of the Windows versions I had used in the past. Much functionality is missing. It is clear Intuit doesnt invest too heavily in this platform. Imports from my credit union transactions all seem to get characterized as the same payee and category, so I have to hand edit every downloaded transaction manually anyway. Quicken Essentials for Mac handled this competently. I cant edit my holdings in my investment accounts as I did in the past with Quicken Essentials for Mac and my retirement account provider is not on the list of available auto-update providers. This product needs some focus and investment by Intuit to make it an acceptably downgraded version to their Windows version. As painful as it is, I would recomment using the Windows version in a virtual machine instead.
